In 2022, FlexiSAF Foundation embarked on a mission to bring hope and educational opportunities to out-of-school children in Anguwan Guragu, a community known as the Disabled Colony, where 99% of its residents suffer from one form of disability or another.

Our Accelerated Learning Program, which utilizes the nationally approved Accelerated Basic Education Program (ABEP) curriculum, was designed to provide a second chance to  children who have either dropped out of school or are overaged and have never been to school. As part of the organizations that developed the ABEP guidelines and a member of the education working group implementing the program in Nigeria, we offer an accelerated pathway to catch up on lost years of schooling and reintegrate back into formal education. The impact of this program has been profound and far-reaching.

Over the past two years, we have witnessed a remarkable transformation in the lives of these children. From the initial days of uncertainty and apprehension, they have blossomed into confident and eager learners, ready to take on new challenges and seize opportunities. Out of the 40 children enrolled in the program, 11 exceptional performers have recently achieved a significant milestone by participating in the common entrance examinations. This examination is a crucial stepping stone for them to enter Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1) or to continue their education within the Accelerated Basic Education Program (ABEP) at Level 3. Their success in this examination is a testament to their hard work, resilience, and the effectiveness of our accelerated learning curriculum. Remarkably, all the children will continue the Level 3 curriculum at our AccLearn to complete the Level 3 ABEP curriculum, which is equivalent to JSS 1-3, and then proceed to write the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The journey to this point has not been easy. Many of these children faced significant obstacles, including financial hardships, lack of access to quality education, and socio-economic challenges compounded by the difficulties associated with their disabilities. Additionally, many of these children serve as guides for their parents or as the primary breadwinners for their families due to their parents’ disabilities, which prevents them from attending formal school. Recognizing these unique challenges, our accelerated learning program is designed to be flexible, accommodating the children’s need for timely learning at their convenience. We also provide healthy food to encourage and motivate our beneficiaries, ensuring they are well-nourished and ready to learn.

The testimonials from the children and their families speak volumes about the impact of the program. One student, Fatima Nuhu, shared her story:

“Before joining the Accelerated Learning Program, I thought my dreams of becoming a doctor were over. But now, I have hope again. I passed the common entrance examination, and I am excited to continue my education.”

Fatima’s passion for medicine is evident; she always chooses to act as a doctor during each of our career day events. Her words and actions encapsulate the essence of what we strive to achieve at FlexiSAF Foundation, restoring hope and creating pathways for a brighter future (Back to School, Back to Life).

As these children move forward, they carry with them the knowledge and skills they have acquired, as well as the confidence to pursue their dreams. They will remain in the AccLearn space, advancing to Level 3 and further strengthening their academic foundations. At FlexiSAF Foundation, we remain committed to supporting these children every step of the way. We will continue to provide them with the resources, mentorship, and encouragement they need to succeed. Their achievements inspire us to keep pushing forward, to reach more children, and to make a lasting difference in the education landscape. The restored hope of these children is not just a personal triumph but a beacon of possibility for countless others in similar situations. It is a reminder that with the right support and opportunities, every child can achieve greatness, no matter their starting point.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our instructors, staff, partners, donors, and supporters who have made this journey possible.
