Who is Alheri ?

In 2017, Alheri Francis, 13, moved with her mother from Jagindi, a village in Kaduna, to settle down in Abuja. As a family grappling with sustenance in Nigeria’s federal capital, enrolling Alheri in school could not have been a priority. A vibrant young girl, she spent her days doing household  chores or hawking groundnuts. One fortunate day, FlexiSAF Foundation mobilized Alheri as part of the out-of-school children to speak at a press conference organised by Connected Development (CODE) to advocate for the amendment of the UBE Act by the government – making senior secondary education free. Speaking at the conference, Alheri impressed a Good Samaritan who would sponsor her primary education through FlexiSAF Foundation’s adoption program. Because this promising girl, after enrolment, struggled a lot to settle in school, she was assigned a volunteer mentor, Aminah (…) who would closely monitor her education, progress and connect more deeply with her through effective guidance and counselling. Alheri became more in love with school so much that she was registered for extra lessons at her school, Model primary school, Jahi, Abuja. Today, she speaks English fluently at Primary Two and is performing wonderfully in arithmetic. Her teachers also praise her improvement in character and enthusiasm.
